Boxing Action & Results

21/04/2007 - Southern Counties Senior Novices - Canterbury, Kent

West Hill Boxers, Dave Warren U-69 Kg and Fred Phelps U-75 Kg were two of many who entered the Southern Counties Novice ABA's held in Canterbury, Kent.

Dave still not 100% fit after suffering from a chest infection was first on - he had hoped to ease himself into the tournament gently while returning to full fitness, but no such luck unfortunately, as he came up against a very worthy opponent in Adam Cracknell of Woking. Dave battled gamely but was unable to get the better of Adam who boxed well to take a majority points decision.

Adam boxed a 2nd time later the same day and produced another fine performance to reach the Area final, which he lost to Shane McGuigan.

Fred was paired against Liam Mattingley of Golden Ring in what turned out to be a very tough contest. Fred boxed superbly well and took the unanimous points victory against a tough and determined opponent who seemed to walk through everything thrown at him. Liam having suffered a standing count in the 1st should be commended for his determination and strong resolve.

Fred had to box for a second time later in the day - his opponent, Adam Dunkley of Moulescombe who had earlier received a bye. Fred produced his life time best performance to push Dunkley, seven years his senior all the way and only just lost by the tightest of majority decisions. Adam, a true sportsman, as are all the lads from Moulescombe - an excellent attitude installed into them by their coaching staff no doubt, was full of praise for Fred's performance.

27/04/2007 - South Norwood and Victory Dinner Show

Club captain Barry Buchanan (pictured below) was the only West Hill representative to appear on the South Norwood and Victory show but made an impact all the same by securing an excellent majority points win over New Addington's G Gardiner.

It was an excellent result for Barry, considering he was given a standing count in the 2nd round when having to stop mid action after ripping a shoulder muscle in his favoured left arm. Asked if he wish to retire Barry refused to give in to the pain and dug deep to pull off an amazing result considering his injury.

An inspirational performance!

The "Crouching Tiger" (Barry) will reach an important milestone on Saturday 19th May, when he will contest his 50th bout.

Barry's enthusiasm remains as intense as ever, as does his commitment to both his training and his captaincy of the club.

Every one involved with the West Hill would like to congratulate Barry on reaching his 50th milestone and would further encourage him to push hard toward the his 100th - Well done Bazza!

11/05/2007 - Whitstable ABC Show

Friday 11th May and the club took 3 boys to the Whitstable ABC show in Kent - All 3 boxed.

First to box was Jake Towse who won a bruising battle with Stacy's Michael Andrews by unanimous points - It was an excellent all action contest.

Next up was Enrik Rrukaj who was matched against home boxer Lee Stratton in a rematch, their first meeting had been won by Lee.

Both boys, still novices, both showed how quickly committed lads can improve in just a short time, by putting on an excellent display with Lee coming out on top once again in a close contest.

Last to box from the trio was senior Shaun Attrell who seems unstoppable at present going from strength to strength with every contest, taking significant scalps along the way.

Shaun wasn't about to let his run finish and boxed superbly to take a unanimous points win over 4 x 2's against Junior ABA finalist Luke Gibb of Nemesis ABC.

Boxing at it's finest would describe this bout best as both boys should be commended on their ring craft.

12/05/2007 - Norwich ABC Show

Saturday 12th May and it was off to Norwich with another trio of boxers Kyle Logan, Ollie Bristow and Steve Hill.

Kyle boxed in the first bout of the night against Billy Kent of Five Star ABC and took a decisive yet majority decision after forcing Billy to take 2 standing counts.

Ollie was next to box in bout 4 against Reece Smith from Gator ABC. Ollie brave as a lion and as strong as an Ox as always gave it his all.

He didn't take a step backward and was relentlessly on the offensive against a well schooled Smith, whose slick boxing skills secured a unanimous points decision.

Steve was last of the trio to box in Bout 7 against Noel Mahoney of Lion ABC. Steve boxed well but didn't quite match the work rate of his opponent and just lost on a majority decision - Apologies to both boys as the camera's battery ran out just prior to the end of the bout, as such the photo opportunity was sadly missed.

Many thanks to Norwich ABC for being so accommodating - ensuring all 3 of our lads boxed in the first hand full of bouts in order that we could get back to Hastings at a reasonable hour.

Thanks and Appreciation

Our thanks go to Barclays Bank for their kind donation to the club gratefully received by the Wednesday evening Juniors pictured below.
