Part #2
The
3 Commands Of The Referee
As a referee
I am only supposed to say three words to you:
BOX,
STOP, and BREAK.
The English
language is part of international amateur boxing rules, therefore
if you box abroad and the referee did not speak English you
would still hear these three terms.
It is important
to fully understand the meaning of each command as, Amateur
Boxing the world over speaks English.
Any other verbal communication
you hear from me while you are in the ring is for your benefit
and is to prevent you getting disqualified or stopped.
The rest of my communication
to you is made through my hands - which we will talk about in
another instalment.
All three commands are self
explanatory if you have been trained correctly.
I say 'BOX'
at the beginning of a bout, when everyone is ready to go (as
per the process in the last newsletter).
I will say 'BOX'
after I have had to 'STOP'
the bout for any reason.

|
If I say 'STOP'
then it means exactly that, both boxers have to stop what they
are doing and await my instructions.
If required I will send you to
a neutral corner, while I give your opponent a standing count
for example.
Wait there!,
stand freely without support from the corner or the ropes!
The longer you take huffing and puffing and storming
around the ring then the longer you are distracting me, discipline
yourself to go to the neutral corner upon instructions quickly
and without fuss.
Wait until I say 'BOX'
before you continue.
The 'BREAK' command
is easy and one that can rely in your favour if used correctly.
It is also one of the most easily
confused by boxers with little or no experience.
I say: 'BREAK'
when reffing a bout and a lot of boxers will stand and look at
me. Well read on and never be confused again.
The command 'BREAK'
means simply to break away from your opponent because you are
in an accidental clinch or the ref cannot establish which boxer
is holding, as both of you might be doing it.
After the
command 'BREAK' is announced, then take ONE
step back, and carry on boxing. A layback and then carrying
on piling in is not permitted, make sure you take a full step
out before you continue.
The benefit
to boxers reading this newsletter is that if you were to take
a step back after breaking and then land a shot you could
not and should not be penalised if you have complied with
the ref's wishes. There is an offence of punching on the break
but as long as that step-away is pronounced if you see a knock
out shot then it would be OK with me.
I will be
back, hopefully commitments allowing, in issue #5
to detail:

Standing Count"
