Boxing Action & Results

Slightly out of date sequence but an achievement that fully deserves pride of place, our lead story in this issue is:

Frank Smith Wins The U44 Class 1 Golden Gloves Title

Frank accompanied by his coach Gary White and club coach Ian Bourner who acted as 2nd traveled the long distance to Knottingly (24th March 2007) to turn in an exemplary display and lift the title 7-5 on points against a very able and worthy finalist, Andra Mulden of Batesons Burley Hill ABC.

Frank has now emulated the achievement of his elder brother James "Sid" who won a Golden Gloves title in 2006.

Frank's coach Gary White was over the moon saying "I knew Frank would be a champion the day he walked in the gym - I couldn't be more pleased."

Two weeks previously Frank had traveled to Spennymoor where he ruthlessly stopped his opponent B. Upson in the 2nd round to secure his place in the final.

Gary and Frank are pictured below with Westhill's head coach Dave Bishop

Gary, Frank and Dave

Dave too, is full of praise for Frank saying "I expected Frank to win the title but nothing is ever guaranteed. Frank still had to get in there and take care of business, which he did in fine style - Well done Frank!. It's a great achievement for the brothers, and for the clu - it would be wonderful if youngest brother Jesse could follow up next year"

09/03/2007 - Royal National Hotel London WC1

Ben White was the only West Hill boxer on the bill held by Hollington ABC at the celubrious Royal National Hotel just off Russell Square WC1

Ben turned in a performance fit for the occasion smartly boxing his way to a majority points decision over Bromley and Downham ABC's Harry Napper.

The 2 had met previously on our home show where a disappointing "No Contest" was the result. Ben made sure he left no margin for error on this occasion, building a substantial lead that a game Napper could not pull back although giving it his all and coming back strongly in the 3rd round.

Trophies were presented by Nigal Ben - Unfortunately no photographs have become available at this time, but how's this for dedication, Ben back in the gym was straight down to business and got stuck into cleaning the gym, he is seen in action with the club's hoover lovingly known as "Big Henry" - Sorry Ben the bribe not to publish this photo wasn't big enough ;-)

16/03/2007 - Winter Gardens, Margate

Five West Hill boxers were in action at the Winter Gardens in Margate on The Grange ABC's home show, they experienced mixed fortune.

First to box, for the last time in West Hill colours (at least for the time being) was Simon Powell, who, with his family have now moved north.

Simon docked a point in the last round of his contest lost a majority decision against Bexley's Kenan Housein - we could not have been more gutted for him as he wanted to leave on a winning note!

Simon pictured below with his coach Gary White is by unanimous consensus a smashing young man and will make a valuable addition to his new boxing club. Quiet and unassuming Simon's dedication is second to none and we all wish Simon, Roger and the entire Powell family every success - Don't become strangers, you are always welcome at the West Hill.

Good Luck Simon

Second to box was Fred Phelps, who was unable to match the excellent display he had put in during his previous

bout against Moulescombe's Ed Lawrence but did well all the same to dig deep and grind out a win against St Peter's Joel James after hurting his right elbow in the 2nd round - the two are set to meet again in the near future. Fred and Joel are pictured below.

Fred

Kellen Leimetter (below) was 3rd to box against local Grange boxer S Hennerbury. Kell in just his second bout boxed sweetly for periods but Hennerbury in front of rawcuss home support was determined to do well and forced Kell to take a standing count in the 2nd. Kell composed himself well and looked to be coming back into the bout as Hennerbury began to wilt.

Hennerbury rallied once more which persuaded the referee to step in and stop the fight - somewhat prematurely in the opinion of some - however these judgment calls are never easy and we always respect the referee's decision.

Kel

Next to box Shaun Attrell (below) turned in another excellent display of boxing to out wit his opponent Jay Campbell of Margate ABC.

Shaun dominated the bout firing combinations from all angles with devastating hand speed and accuracy.

Shaun

Last up but certainly not least was Light heavyweight Adam Haniver who took on local Grange boxer Andy Morris. Morris returning from an extended lay off from the sport boxed superbly to take a unanimous points decision.

Adam is used to waiting - he is nearly always scheduled to box near the end of shows he attends. His pre fight ritual that was captured on film and has ben voted to be our outstanding photo of this issue entitled:

"Any Time, Anywhere - I Can Sleep"

Adam The Sleep Monster

24/03/2007 - Junior ABA's Chatham

Both Ben White and James "Sid" Smith entered the Junior ABA's held at Lords Wood Chatham. Ben was entered in the U54 kgs weight category, Sid in the U57kg category.

The result of their bouts were the exact opposite, as Ben lost on a tight majority decision to Ben Watts of St Gerards ABC (below)....

... while Sid won a tight majority decision against Billy Rumble of St Marys ABC, making it a good day for the Smith's, as brother Frank clinched the Golden Gloves title within the hour as detailed above.
