"Boxing Trivia"

The Real McCoy

One night a drunk man in a bar loudly insisted that Kid McCoy was not the boxer he purported to be. In the ensuing brawl, McCoy, by way of proof, mercilessly flattened his opponent.

"It's the real McCoy," the man then remarked, struggling to his feet - and thereby ushering a common expression into the English language.

..........

While watching Kid McCoy training at a gym in White Plains, New York, one day, P. G. Woodhouse impulsively asked the welterweight champion whether he might join him in the ring. As they prepared for a sparring match, McCoy laughed.

"He had been reminded, he said, of an entertaining incident in his professional career, when he was fighting a contender who had the misfortune to be stone deaf. It was not immediately that he became aware of the other's affliction, but when he did he acted promptly and shrewdly.

"As the third round entered its concluding stages he stepped back a pace and pointed to his adversary's corner, to indicate to him that the bell had rung, which of course was not the case but far from it.

"'Oh, thank you so much,' said the adversary, 'Very civil of you.'

"He dropped his hands and turned away, whereupon Kid McCoy immediately knocked him out."

"Boxing Action "

Golden Gloves PreLims Bognor Regis - Jan 26th:

Three boys entered the Golden Gloves, they were Henry Woodman Ball at Class 1 U-50Kg, Kyle Logan Class 3 U-54Kg and Steve Hill Class 3 U-63Kg, the three lads are pictured pictured below:

The 3 Amigos

Of the three Kyle was the only one to box as Steve was awarded a walkover into the Regional final and Henry a walkover through to the National semi final.

Kyle boxed superbly to beat last years semi finalist Aaron Buff of Woking ABC and secured a place in the Regional final stage along side Steve, against Miley Lee of Guildford City ABC.

Golden Gloves Regional Finals Bognor Regis - Feb 2nd:

Kyle was first to box against strongly fancied Miley Lee of Guildford City ABC, Lee a former national champion started well and had a good lead going into the 3rd round.

Kyle had no choice but to literally go for a stoppage but Miley was to well schooled and would not be denied and won by a clear margin - Good luck Miley in future rounds.

Miley Lee and Kyle in action

Steve Hill faired better against M Grant, another opponent from Guildford City ABC and was well ahead on points, when the referee disqualified Grant for consistently holding.

Steve moved onto the National 1/4 final to be held at Bristol on the 16th Feb.

Margate Show - Feb 8th:

In the middle of so many championships it was good to get out to a show. Two boys were matched and both boxed on Feb 8th at Margate.

Enrik Rrukaj soon got into his rhythm against Louie Rose of Westree ABC and won comfortably by a unanimous points verdict.

Club captain Barry Buchanan hoped to follow suit against James Simon James of Ramsgate ABC, after a long lay off with a back injury but it wasn't to be!

Soon in the 1st round the two boxers clashed heads which opened up a nasty gash over Barry's left idea causing the bout to be stopped with an LRSC1 - Cut being awarded to against Barry.

Enrik and Bazza

Liversley hall, Forest hill, S E London - 12th Feb

4 days later and Enrik was back in the ring continuing where he had left off just a few days earlier. This time his opponent was Billy Hudd of Marvels Lane Boys Club. Enrik boxed intelligently to secure an excellent unanimous points verdict against a quality opponent, before heading off for an adventure weekend with his club mates.

Enrik enjoying his weekend

Osmington Bay PGL Trip 10th - 14th Feb

20 + club Members were fortunate enough to enjoy an action packed weekend of fun due to the kind generosity of the Youth Opportunity Fund and the organisational skills of Positive Future's Mark Straughan.

Osmington Bay Bunch

The PGL (Parents Get Lost) weekend of activities was held at the PGL centre Osmington Bay, Weymouth, the professional running of which should be complimented, they even arranged good weather to ensure maximum fun was had by all who attended.

We will be creating a special page to honour the event, so what follows is just a small taster.

Mark Straughan and soon to be new club coach Paul Edwards took on the responsibility of Group leaders, ably assisted by brothers Barry and Dennis Buchanan, and brothers James and Shaun Attrell.

Just a few of the activities included were:

Climbing

Cliff Hanger

Trapeze and swings

2 Big Kids

Challenges up high

Tucker upon high

Bristol, Golden Gloves ¼ Final - 16th Feb

Steve Hill, class 3 U63 Kg who missed out on the Osmington Bay trip was hoping to join Henry Woodman-Ball in the national 1/2 semi final, in his way stood last years finalist Wayne Ingram Of Gloucester ABC.

Steven Hill

Steve boxed well against a vastly more experienced opponent but was unable to find the gaps and land telling blows eventually coming up short on this occasion by a score of 11-1 in favour of Ingram. We wish you will for future rounds Wayne!

Aldershot Golden Gloves ½ Final - 23rd Feb

Class 1 U50 Kg Henry Woodman-Ball was the last man standing for the club, in his way to securing a place in his first national final was Simon Barker Repton ABC.

Young Henry

Henry got off to a slow start against a slick well schooled opponent and was behind at the end of the 1st round. Enthusiastic to make up ground in the 2nd Henry went looking for Barker, but in doing so walked into a couple of superbly timed shots that resulted in the bout being awarded to Simon by a stoppage - Good luck in the final Simon!

Asian Community Centre Plumstead - 29th Feb

A great night for club coach Gary White as charge Kyle Logan and son Ben White both boxed extremely well to overcome to solid opponents.

Ben and Ktle

Kyle Logan was first to box against J Swandale of Nemesis ABC. Swandale vastly more experienced than Kyle looked good and applied pressure right from the 1st bell, however it wasn't long before Kyle was pushing him back. Kyle continued to outwork his opponent and was comfortably ahead when the referee called a halt to proceedings late in the 3rd round.

Ben rounded off a good night for both club and family with a unanimous points victory against a strong opponent in Dan Pollard of Honour Oak ABC. Ben was boxing in his first outing as a Senior marked the occasion with a solid performance and a clear points victory against an opponent looking to land big punches.

Romford ABC Show - 07th March

Friday 7th March and the club had 4 boys matched on a well organised Romford Show.

Enrik Rrukaj improving with every bout continued his winning run with a unanimous points victory against J Judd of Dagenham ABC. Enrik got stronger as the bout went on and gave Judd a standing count in the 3rd.

Enrik wins again

James McMahon repeated Enrik's success also giving his opponent Jack Healy of Chadwell Coringham ABC a standing count in the 1st round before dominating the rest of the bout to secure a unanimous points victory.

Jake Towse was up against the vastly experienced Joe Winson of Finchley ABC in a rematch of a tightly contested first meeting. Winson bouncing back from defeat in the NABC semi final, really upped his game and made hisJake experience count taking a unanimous points victory. Jake, still relatively inexperienced continues to bridge the gap steadily and has an exciting future ahead.

Ben White, now a senior was last to box against Josh Williams of Launceston ABC, Josh along with 2 team mates and his coach had driven all Benthe way from Cornwall to box, commitment that should be commended.

The 1st round belonged to Josh, with the 2nd and 3rd rounds even. A another good performance from Ben, but not quite enough to clinch victory with Josh being awarded a unanimous points victory.

Thanks and Appreciation

Club chairman Colin Parsons gratefully received a cheque that was part of the proceeds generated from the show "Drop Dead Divas" held at St Mary in the Castle in August 2007 in aid of local charities. The event was organised by Carol Porter and Kim Watson. Also at the presentation was Sarah Travis, the show's musical director.

Club Chairman Colin accepts cheque

A massive thank you to the Youth Opportunity Fund, Positive Futures and Mark Straughan for laying on such a great weekend at Osmington Bay and to Paul Edwards for pairing up with Mark to lead the group.
