#1
Welcome to issue #1 of Hastings
Westhill ABC's newsletter, we hope that in future there
will be many - preferably packed full of club Member's
success stories past and present.
The newsletter will be published
on an, as and when basis so check back to our website on a regular
basis. www.westhill-boxing.com
As I write a new season is just
beginning so there is no better way to kick of our first edition
than to ask Head Coach Dave Bishop (pictured) to outline what
he expects from club Members, his hopes and aspirations over
the coming season.
Dave
writes - The Westhill has always been extremely popular, but
never so popular as it at present, the popularity of boxing
in general appears to be going through a resurgence. On a regular
basis 40+ boys and girls are turning up for training. This increased
popularity may well be due to the recent "Contender"
series, who knows, but whatever the reason I must stress the
importance of adhering to club rules when numbers are especially
high.
We are adding to the coaching
staff as a necessity and we shall soon have a new addition,
Graham, who is at present in the midst of the ABA coaching course.
I look forward to welcoming him to the coaching team officially
in the near future. Graham in common with the rest of the coaching
team boxed at the Westhill and appreciates just how rewarding
it can be to pass on that knowledge to aspiring boxers.
The Westhill has an abundance
of talent, both new and established in the ranks this year and
I am expecting great things over the coming season. My simple
message is:
"Practice makes
permanent, so only practice good technique"
The coaching staff are dedicated
to your welfare as well as your success so be sure to listen
watch and learn. If you hope to advance your skills and your
fitness levels then you will need to match their dedication
and commitment, therefore do your roadwork, circuits, speed
work and skills training in dedicated fashion. Always strive
to archive a small improvement in at least one area of your
boxing during every training session you attend.

Gary White continues
to organise running events for you to enjoy on both Friday evenings
and Sunday mornings, so get involved if you haven't already.
At present Friday
evenings are aimed at target training over a 500 metre course,
these commence 18:30 at the Stade Car Park (opposite Iceland,
near the fountain)
Sundays are aimed
at putting miles in the legs, don't panic the pre-season 6 and
7 mile runs are finished and Gary is concentrating on timed runs
over a 4 mile course starting at the old bathing pool, St.Leonards-on-Sea
(Each Sunday - 09:30)
There is not much
else I wish to add apart from my best wishes to you all over the
coming season.

Basics
of Skipping
It's a little
known fact, that just 20 minutes continuous skipping is equal
in physical output to playing a full game of squash at an advanced
level!
Without doubt
skipping is one of the very best exercises a boxer (in fact anyone)
can do, as it improves co-ordination, movement and leg conditioning,
yet is often overlooked as being just a means to warm up.
For the novice
boxer the embarrassment of tripping over their own shoes laces
is often a good enough reason to avoid picking up a skipping rope,
but hey what's the worst thing that can happen, you trip over
a few times - big deal, so did all the great boxers in history,
so you're in good company!
Let's look at
a format that anyone can follow, whatever your age - Yes parents
you can have a go, however we recommend that Roger Powell as you
are of advanced years you had best check with your doctor first
;-)
1. Choose a rope
of suitable length - If you put your foot on the centre of the
rope both handles should be above your waste.
2. Concentrate
at first on relaxing your shoulders and moving the rope with your
wrists, not with big arm movements.
3. Keep your feet
together bouncing on your toes, avoid being flat footed. Work
up to a level whereby you can continuously skip with your two
feet together - as demonstrated by Leon Spinks (Olympic Champion)

4. Once you are
comfortable move on to the following routine:
- Five skips using
both feet
- Lift your left leg slightly
and perform 5 skips on your right leg.
- Back to middle - 5 skips on
both feet
- Lift your right leg slightly
and perform 5 skips on your left leg.
- Back to middle - 5 skips on
both feet
- Repeat continuously until you
are comfortable then simply decrease the repetitions to 4, then
,3 and so on.
- By the time you reach 1repetition
(Middle, Right, Middle, Left, Middle and so on) you will be very
proficient.
- Thereafter you can start to addmovement
to your skipping, skip in your boxing stance.
- Add speed and interval work to
your skipping routine.
- Eventually you may reach advanced
levels and skip as well as Floyd
Mayweather Jnr.
