Questions From George in Nottingham

I have been too many shows this year and on more than one occasion I have seen both boys disqualified for not "breaking" or "stopping" when instructed.

That is as it should be, no argument there! However on 2 occasions well schooled boys were disqualified which surprised me - On both occasions both boys complained that the overwhelming support close to ringside drowned out the referees commands.

Do you think it would be prudent to allow referees a more physical input on these occasions - Could the referee make a wedge shape with his arms to part the boxers or better still slap both boys on the shoulder to grab their attention?

It is a shame to see both a good bout stopped. Also I am sure referees could do without the negative comments they have to endure when following the constrictive format of voice instruction only?

Reply From Rees Hopcraft - ABA Referee

Dear George,

The amateur referee is there to ensure the rules are adhered to. The professional referee has the same task but is allowed to do so in a more robust fashion.

If the boxers you speak of are "well schooled" then they should be able to hear the ref. For any of us that have boxed in big fights then the crowd are a buzz in the background and the ref is in your ear at all times.

The amateur ref is not allowed to touch boxers to make them break or stop. Discretion is allowed, however. At least it is as far as I am concerned. If the crowd is so vociferous that the referee does not think that the boxers can hear his commands then the referee can stop the bout and ask the MC to announce that shouting and cheering during the rounds be kept to a minimum.

If a referee states "STOP" and a boxer continues against his opponent - he will be disqualified. If the boxer says he did not hear the referee's instruction then the referee should ask each of the judges. If the majority heard the referee's instruction then the boxer will be disqualified.

The message is clear - control your crowd.

Thank you for an excellent question George, I hope my reply clears up any confusion.

Boxing Action & Results

19/05/2007 - Moulescombe ABC Show

West Hill Boxers, Dave Warren and Barry Buchanan represented the club at the moulescombe ABC show held in the salubrious Hilton Hotel situated on Brighton's Sea Front.

Dave and Baz

Both men boxed superbly to secure points victories, Dave against Golden Ring's Will Thompson and Barry against Cheshunt's Billy Crotty.

As reported in our last issue this was Barry's 50th bout - a milestone he has reached with dedication and determination. Both boxers did themselves and the club proud.

20/05/2007 - Lynn Athletic Boxing Club

Michael Gregory, head coach at Lynn Athletic Amateur Boxing Club kindly invited the club to a Sunday morning sparring session, that we were honoured to attend.

The lads outside the Lynn Athletic ABC

We took a real mix age weight and experience to the Lynn's Camberwell based gym yet Michael was able to accommodate all in what was a thoroughly positive experience for all involved.

Thank you Michael, the Lynn coaches and all the Lynn

boxers for making us feel so welcome. We look forward to receiving you on the Coast for a return session, some fish and chips and a cup of Rosy Lee in the summer.

26/05/2007 - Southern Counties Golden Belt

The club had 3, 1991 born boys eligible for the Golden Belt expertly hosted by the Guildford ABC at the Connaught Centre in Aldershot - Enrik Rrukaj at U52Kg, Jake Towse at U60Kg and James McMahon at U63Kg.

It was to be a day of mixed fortunes. Enrik received a walkover into the pre 1/4 finals stage while James (pictured below) was to box superbly TWICE to secure his place in the next round beating both Jack Hughes of Waterside ABC and Braden Mercer of Hove ABC convincingly.

Paddy McMahon

Jake didn't have his best day and went down by a majority points decision to Elite Gravesend's Charlie Girton who went on to beat Guildford's Jess Goodand Tait by a unanimous points decision to join the Southern counties representatives going to Wolverhampton in the next round .(Pre 1/4 finals) on the 3rd June 2007.

01/07/2007 - White Hawk ABC & Hillcrest ABC Show - Moulescombe Sussex

Two West Hill boxers were matched on the White hawk ABC & Hillcrest ABC show held in Moulescombe, they were Steve Hill who was hoping to over turn a previous loss to Conner Sandells of Hillcrest ABC and the in form, virtually unstoppable Shaun Attrell who was paired against Adam Cutter of Golden Ring ABC.

Steve Hill

Steve fought well and gave it his all but didn't produce his best and went down by unanimous points while Shaun remained at the top of his game and produced another fine display to win by a unanimous points decision.

02/07/2007 Golden Belt Pre 1/4 Finals

Following on from his fine performances at Aldershot James "Paddy" McMahon was up against Omar Khalik of Braunstone in the Pre 1/4 finals held in Wolverhampton.

Paddy got off to an excellent start and led 5 - 1 at the end of the 1st round, however a strong and robust Khalik came back strongly in what many considered to be the bout of the day to take the decision 7 - 6.

Enrik finally got to box in the competition having had a W/O in the Southern Counties stage - not something he wanted, but that is boxing at times.

He took full advantage of the opportunity winning 8 - 6 against Sunny Bhogal of Graisley.

Enrik built up a good lead in rounds 1 and 2, but as with Paddy's bout his opponent came back strongly to make the decision close.

Enrik is pictured below celebrating both his win and leaving school with friend and fellow West Hill boxer Jake Towse.

Jake and Enrik

In the 1/4 final stage held on the 9th June, Enrik traveled to Manchester where he was disappointed to lose on points to Matty Carson of Vauxhalls ABC.

Thanks and Appreciation

Well done to all the lads who ran in the St Michael's Hospice charity run and raised funds - Great effort!

The 8 lads that took part were (as pictured):

Ed Adams, Enrik Rrukaj, Barry Buchanan, Shaun Attrell, Ben White, Ollie Bristow, Tom Hammond and Simon Powell.

Simon traveled all the way down from his new home in Stoke to participate - that's commitment!!
