"Boxing
Trivia"
The
popularity of boxing
On July
2nd 1921, the historic Heavyweight battle between Jack Dempsey
and George Carpentier became the first fight to gross more
than $1,000,000 in gate receipts. How popular was the event?
Its coverage took up all of the first thirteen pages of
The New York Times - except for a small space on the front
page devoted to the day's other big story: the formal end
of World War I.
Sometimes
it doesn't matter how big you are!
George Foreman
once recalled:
"After
I won the gold medal in the '68 Olympics, I went to Las
Vegas, you had to be twenty-one to get into the casinos
back then, but because of my size, I'd been getting into
places underage for years."
"So
I went to the Silver Slipper with some friends, where I
won a couple of jackpots. Soon after a security guard came
over and asked, 'Aren't you George Foreman, the gold-medal
winner?' I was so proud he knew me. 'You're not twenty-one
yet!' he said. 'Get out of here! And I better not ever catch
you in here again!"

Masonic
Hall Hastings March 14th 2008
A
fantastic evenings entertainment, for the benefit of charity.
Well done
Dave Harris for organising such a superb event and Dave
Bishop for some brilliant match making. Every bout was very
closely contested.
The audience
was in buoyant and giving mood all evening, so plenty will
have been raised and everyone left having enjoyed a great
evenings entertainment.

28th
March 2008 Whitehawk Show Holiday Inn Brighton
The club suffered 3 losses
from 3 bouts on the Whitehawk show, held at the Holiday
Inn Brighton on the 28th March.
Steve Garlick
was first to box against P Shannazi of home club whitehawk
ABC and although he lost by a unanimous decision and didn't
box as well as he is capable, there were positives in terms
of experience gained against an awkward southpaw opponent
over 3 hard fought rounds.

Kellen Leimetter,
pictured above, is incredibly still looking for his 1st
win after a run of tightly contested contests, the decisions
of which have all gone against him, was also matched against
an opponent from home club Whitehawk ABC. Kell unfortunately
was again on the wrong end of a very tight majority points
decision. Keep the faith Kell, your time will come.

Last to
box was Ben White, pictured above, who was pitched against
Greg Evans of Golden Ring ABC over 4 X 2 minute rounds.
Evans who had height, weight and age over Ben boxed superbly
well behind the jab to secure a unanimous points decision
victory. Ben as he always does gave it his all and will
have learned from the experience.
Senior
County Senior ABAs 29th March 2008
The Southern
County senior ABA prelims were held in Canterbury on Saturday
29th March.
We had 3
young men representing the club, they were Shaun Attrell
in the 57 - 60 Kg category, Barry Buchanan in the 64 - 69
Kg category and Adam Haniver in the 75 - 81 Kg category.
Shaun was awarded a walkover into the final while Barry
and Adam pictured below with "Big Eric" had to
box on the day.

Barry was
up against Vinny Woolford of the Grange ABC, an opponent
who had previously beaten him. It was a cracking bout, but
in form Barry was not to be denied and won by a majority
decision.
Adam knew
he would have to dig really deep after an extended lay off
in a very competitive category. He was matched against S
Couzens of Gosport ABC, a strong opponent who didn't take
a step backward giving Adam 2 standing counts in the 3rd,
however Adam did all that was asked of him and rallied back
in the last and looked to be turning the tide when he came
under fire once again, prompting the referee to stop the
bout 9 seconds before the final bell - A disappointing end
to a superb bout.
