"Boxing Trivia"

The popularity of boxingDempsey Carpentier poster

On July 2nd 1921, the historic Heavyweight battle between Jack Dempsey and George Carpentier became the first fight to gross more than $1,000,000 in gate receipts. How popular was the event? Its coverage took up all of the first thirteen pages of The New York Times - except for a small space on the front page devoted to the day's other big story: the formal end of World War I.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how big you are!

George Foreman once recalled:

"After I won the gold medal in the '68 Olympics, I went to Las Vegas, you had to be twenty-one to get into the casinos back then, but because of my size, I'd been getting into places underage for years."

George Foreman"So I went to the Silver Slipper with some friends, where I won a couple of jackpots. Soon after a security guard came over and asked, 'Aren't you George Foreman, the gold-medal winner?' I was so proud he knew me. 'You're not twenty-one yet!' he said. 'Get out of here! And I better not ever catch you in here again!"

Masonic Hall Hastings March 14th 2008

Mike UrhegyA fantastic evenings entertainment, for the benefit of charity.

Well done Dave Harris for organising such a superb event and Dave Bishop for some brilliant match making. Every bout was very closely contested.

The audience was in buoyant and giving mood all evening, so plenty will have been raised and everyone left having enjoyed a great evenings entertainment.

28th March 2008 Whitehawk Show Holiday Inn Brighton

The club suffered 3 losses from 3 bouts on the Whitehawk show, held at the Holiday Inn Brighton on the 28th March.

Steve Garlick was first to box against P Shannazi of home club whitehawk ABC and although he lost by a unanimous decision and didn't box as well as he is capable, there were positives in terms of experience gained against an awkward southpaw opponent over 3 hard fought rounds.

Kell

Kellen Leimetter, pictured above, is incredibly still looking for his 1st win after a run of tightly contested contests, the decisions of which have all gone against him, was also matched against an opponent from home club Whitehawk ABC. Kell unfortunately was again on the wrong end of a very tight majority points decision. Keep the faith Kell, your time will come.

Ben

Last to box was Ben White, pictured above, who was pitched against Greg Evans of Golden Ring ABC over 4 X 2 minute rounds. Evans who had height, weight and age over Ben boxed superbly well behind the jab to secure a unanimous points decision victory. Ben as he always does gave it his all and will have learned from the experience.

Senior County Senior ABAs 29th March 2008

The Southern County senior ABA prelims were held in Canterbury on Saturday 29th March.

We had 3 young men representing the club, they were Shaun Attrell in the 57 - 60 Kg category, Barry Buchanan in the 64 - 69 Kg category and Adam Haniver in the 75 - 81 Kg category. Shaun was awarded a walkover into the final while Barry and Adam pictured below with "Big Eric" had to box on the day.

Adam, Baz and Eric

Barry was up against Vinny Woolford of the Grange ABC, an opponent who had previously beaten him. It was a cracking bout, but in form Barry was not to be denied and won by a majority decision.

Adam knew he would have to dig really deep after an extended lay off in a very competitive category. He was matched against S Couzens of Gosport ABC, a strong opponent who didn't take a step backward giving Adam 2 standing counts in the 3rd, however Adam did all that was asked of him and rallied back in the last and looked to be turning the tide when he came under fire once again, prompting the referee to stop the bout 9 seconds before the final bell - A disappointing end to a superb bout.

Southern Counties ABA Finals 04th April 2008

Held in the prestigious surroundings of Dover Town Hall, a building steeped in history this was a night to remember, especially for club captain Barry Buchanan who secured a long overdue senior southern counties title.

First to box was Shaun Attrell in the final of the 57Kg to 60Kg weight category.

Barry and Shaun

Shaun was pitched against Tunbridge Wells ABC's class act Nabil Yahyaoui who still unbeaten had put paid to a quality opponent in Matty Page in the preliminary round.

Shaun didn't step into the ring with any thoughts of Nabil's unblemished record other than ensuring he was to be recorded as the 1st loss on Nabil's card. Shaun boxed superbly well and did everything that was asked of him and more, yet failed to impress the judges, much to our bemusement, and by the end of the 3rd round had only been credited with 1 solitary point.

With no other option left, Shaun went all out for the stoppage in the 4th round and wobbled his opponent with an overhand right but wasn't able to catch Nabil clean after that, eventually losing by 8 points to 3. Nabil and his trainers were gracious in saying it was Nabil's hardest bout to date.

Barry on the other hand left nothing to chance with a measured performance that saw he romp home 17 points to 2 against Anthony Neunie of Crawley ABC who was boxing in the ABAs for the very last time as he hits the upper age threshold for boxing on his next birthday, we wish him well for the future.

Danson Youth Show ABC 05th April 2008 and Marvels Lane ABC show 09th April 2008

The same 2 lads boxed on both the Danson Youth ABC Show, and the Marvels Lane ABC Show held on the 5th and 09th of April respectively, they were Ben White and Enrik Rrukaj.

Enrik

Ben cemented two previous victories by securing 2 further points victories against Y. Javed of Danson Youth ABC and Dan Pollard, now of Marvels Lane ABC.

Enrik unfortunately lost both by points, his opponents were Chris Ioannon of Meridian ABC and Michael Shannon of Marvels Lane ABC who he had previously beaten.

Whitstable ABC Kings Hall Herne Bay 11th March 2008

Carl Turner and Steve Garlick both boxed at Whitstable ABC's show held at the Kings Hall Herne Bay, 11th March 2008. It wasn't to be Carl's night who after a good start was stopped in the 2nd round by his opponent Joe Puttick of Faversham ABC.

Big Steve

Steve faired much better, still on a high from becoming a 1st time Dad, he had no intention of being denied victory and controlled his bout superbly against Wayne Willett of Faversham ABC securing a unanimous points victory. Well done Steve and many congratulations to you and your partner on the new addition to your family, long health and happiness.

Horsham ABC Show Henfield 12th March 2008

Dennis Buchanan was back in action after a short lay off against Moulescoombe ABC's Marcus Eaton. It was a superb bout that many watching thought should have been a candidate for the best bout of the night. Marcus won the bout securing a well deserved points victory. We hope the inevitable rematch will be as close and as exciting.

Combined Services vs. Southern Counties Senior ABA Pre ¼ Finals

Last but certainly not least, it is our pleasure to report that Barry Buchanan was the only Southern Counties representative to win through to the final stages of the Senior ABA competition. Barry was in fine form against his opponent Mark Flowers (Royal Navy) of the Combined Services Team, dominating the bout from the 1st bell comfortably securing an 18 - 6 points victory.

Barry now heads to Sheffield hoping to make history by becoming our 1st Senior ABA champion.
