"A Little Piece Of History"

HWABC would like to thank Guildford coach John Edwards for handing us a little piece of valuable history at a recent show both clubs attended. John had come across a boxing programme from 1949 that detailed one of the HWABC's very first boxers in action at a show in London.

We have scanned the programme for your review as it offers a detailed insight into how much things have or haven't changed depending on your individual perspective over the years.

The programme is in PDF format, therefore you will require Acrobat reader (Free download) to view it. When viewing the programme right click over the image and choose Rotate Clockwise from the drop down menu to improve your viewing experience.

In the centre column of page 3 you will see reference made to G. T. Champ who was scheduled to box in the Heavyweight Novice Competition. This is a wonderful addition to the clubs archives for which we are most grateful to John.

National NACYP Pre 1/4 Final, Army's Maida Barracks Gym - Sat 14th Feb

Jake Towse Class C 57 - 60Kg was up against Eastern counties champion Mick Hansell of Brentwood ABC in the Pre 1/4 final of the CYP championship held at the Army Barracks Gym Aldershot on Saturday 14th February.

Hansell put in a spirited effort throwing lots of punches, however very few reached the target as Jake cleverly parried and blocked the majority before countering with heavy scoring blows that rocked his opponent's head back as they landed.

Jake between rounds

At the end of round 1 Jake was ahead 5-0 and by the close of round 2, 9-2 ahead.

Jake was guilty of taking his foot of the accelerator and cruised through the last 2 rounds allowing Hansell to close the gap a little but ran out a clear 16-6 winner.

Jake is now set to face the London Champion Jack Brayer of Earlsfield ABC on Sat 28th March again at the Maida Barracks Gym.

Portsmouth Stacy ABC Show - Saturday 21st Feb

Coaches Gary White, Ian Bourner and Paul Edwards took three boys to the Portsmouth Stacy ABC Show held at the Charles Dickens Centre Portsmouth on Saturday 21st Feb.

Each coach was delighted that all three boxers performed superbly well each securing victory. Pictured below are the three boxers on display, Steve "The Shot Gun" Garlick with his side guns, 6 shooters Rhys Verlander and Henry Bristow.

The Shot Gun with side arms

Rhys Verlander secured his first victory beating George Anderson of Waterlooville ABC.

Rhys was on top from the start throwing accurate shots to both head and body that resulted in Anderson being retired at the end of the 1st round.

Henry Bristow soon followed suit, again securing his first victory with a superb display of controlled aggression stopping his opponent Luke Dewey of the City of Portsmouth ABC in the very 1st round.

Last to box was senior Steve Garlick, who continues to go from strength to strength.

Steve boxed a very dangerous opponent, Frank Brookes City of Portsmouth ABC, a stocky boxer with a big right hand. Sensibly Steve used his ever improving boxing skills to out manoeuvre Brooks and secured a deserved majority points victory against the local lad Brookes.

NACYP 1/4 Final, Army Gym Maida barracks, Aldershot - Saturday 28th Feb

On Saturday 28th February, Jake Towse continued his fine run of form in the CYP championships, again held in Aldershot at the Army Barracks Gym, as he defeated London champion Jak Brayer to secure his place in the 1/2 final of the CYP championship at U60Kg.

Towse had to come from behind to beat Brayer as he trailed 5-1 after the first round, by the close of the second however, he had leveled the score and went on to win 12-7 securing victory with solid combinations to both head and body.

Bognor ABC Show, Bognor - Saturday 28th Feb

At the Bognor ABC Show held in Bognor on the 28th February Conner Sime won by a unanimous points decision against Robbie Dine of Portsmouth Stacy ABC while Kyle Logan lost on a majority points decision to Ricky Pipe of Gosport ABC.

Conner put in a stella performance against Dine of Portsmouth Stacy ABC, that delighted his coach Gary White , he took control of the bout from the first bell and continued to press home his advantage throughout.

Unfortunately Conner suffered a nasty injury playing football (Dangerous game) to his leg in the week following and will be out of action for several weeks.

Get WELL soon Conner!

Kyle Logan hadn't been firing on all cylinders on a consistent basis of late and was below par against Ricky Pipe of Gosport ABC losing the bout by a majority points decision. Better was sure to come from Kyle who has massive potential!

Whitstable ABC Show - Friday 13th March

Friday the 13th at the Whitstable ABC show wasn't bad luck for Ali Waller, as literally just weeks before his 34th birthday and the end of his amateur boxing career Ali Waller secured his first victory in scintillating style.

Ali proclaimed the victor

Cornered by Dave Bishop and Paul Edwards, Ali got off to the perfect start giving his opponent, local boxer Dan Heggs of home club Whitstable ABC a standing count in the 1st round.

The 2nd round was more even, as Heggs worked his way back into the bout, in the break Ali was advised by his corner to pick up the pace in the 3rd and leave nothing to chance.

He did just that and pressured his opponent until the referee stepped in to bring the action to a close in the 3rd, well done Ali, great job.

As a club we hope will Ali will stay on at the club after his 34th birthday and become a Member of the coaching team.

Hove ABC Show - Sunday 15th March

Four boxers were in action on the 15th at the Hove ABC Show where we believe a little bit of club history may have been made. John Verlander (Uncle) and Rhys Verlander (Nephew) both represented HWABC on the same show, how rare an event must this be?

Rhys boxed well to secure a majority points victory against Adur ABC's C. Wilson, it was a close fought contest that the two will repeat in a rematch later in the month.

John competing in his first bout after an extended break was understandably ring rusty but only just came up short against D. Nutley of Hove ABC losing on a majority points decision, again the 2 are set for a rematch later in the month.

Uncle John

Also to box were Kyle Logan and Ben White, Kyle was back to his best and looks ready for a run of good form in the up coming Junior ABA competition.

Kyle forced old foe Luke Greenfield of Horsham ABC into submission as Luke was retired on his stool between rounds 2 and 3.

Ben, back from illness was up against Brighton City's Dave Murphy.

Murphy poured on the pressure from the start and gave Ben a standing count in the 1st round and kept coming forward throughout. Ben kept his head and stuck to his boxing and gamely turned the bout in his favour to secure a majority points victory.

Ben and Kyle

NACYP 1/2 Final, York Hall - Bethnell Green Sunday 15th March

Jake Towse faced Commonwealth Youth Games Bronze Medallist, 5 times Ulster Champion and 2 times Northern Ireland Champion Paul Hyland in the 1/2 final of the CYP championship at 57 - 60Kg at York Hall Bethnell Green on the 15th March 2009.

Jake who has been boxing for just 2 1/2 years was giving away age and experience to Hyland but it didn't show as he turned in a superb performance.

Rather frustratingly computer scoring was not available which meant it was impossible to know exactly where we stood in the judge's eyes at the end of each round, our gut feeling was that Jake was behind after the 1st round but had at the very minimum pulled any deficit back by the end of the 3rd.

Towsey on the attack against Hyland

Jake fired up by his coach Paul Martin rallied in the 4th round and we were very hopeful he had secured victory as he landed clean scoring shots throughout.

It wasn't to be, it was announced that Hyland had won on a 3 to 2 majority - So disappointing for our lad who had given everything!

A measure of Jake's performance was that ABA chairman Keith Waters, in attendance, heaped praise on Jake and assured him his effort and level of skill had been noted.

You did us proud son!

A measure of the boy was that he was back in the gym the very next day focusing on the junior ABA championships that start on the 28th March.

Best of luck to Paul Hyland in the final from all at Hastings West Hill ABC

The list of runners follows:

The run famed for being one of the hardest in Europe is no easy jog and we cannot thank those who took part enough for their efforts.

Stand out performances were from:

Trevor, for getting round - No small feat :-))

Ali Waller for floating around the course in 1 hr 35 minutes, still on cloud 9 after his victory 2 days previous and ...

As a team the lads won a prize for their efforts to be awarded in March at a special gala event.
