"Boxing Action "

Rounding off the 2009/10 Season

Due to recent work loads updates have been limited and as such there were a few bouts and shows that were not detailed in previous updates - an oversight that I now have time to address:

Kyle Logan took on Max Wicks on Wick's home Adur ABC show in an attempt to reverse a defeat inflicted by Wicks during the CYP championships. The hype of the return bout didn't disappoint with the 2 lads standing toe to toe for 4 pulsating rounds of skilled boxing, from which Kyle emerged the deserved victor. The quality of the bout was such that it secured Kyle the "Best Junior Bout of the Year" award.

Kyle the smile Logan

On the same show George Chapman performed well in his debut bout before narrowly losing to the host club's Charlie Gilmore.

On the same evening Daine Finch secured an excellent victory over Sanjay Choker of Gravesend ABC, Finch boxing superbly against an accomplished opponent while Steve Garlick unfortunately perfomed below his usual high standard and lost on a unanimous decision to host club's Bobby Foreman.

Too cool for school Stevie G

Moving on to the Margate Show where both Rhys Verlander and Kyle Logan secured unanimous points wins in their respective bouts against Keiren Miles of Isle of Thanet ABC and Bradley Page of Margate ABC. Both boys boxed at the top of their game, looking well schooled and in complete control of their bouts.

On the same show both Daine Finch and George Edwards came close to securing victories, both giving their all to ensure we came away with 4 wins out of 4, but both were narrowly piped by their respective opponents Lee Beezer and Stuart Searle. On a high, all four boys performed well and gave their best - We cannot ask for more, well done all lads!

Daine enjoying his other hobbies

The night previous Barry Buchanan was our sole representative boxing at Dartford but the night was cut short, quite literally, when Barry suffered a freak cut above his eye in the 1st round of his bout with Carl Ozimkovski and had to pull out of the bout before the action had chance to heat up - great shame but these things do happen in boxing.

HWABC stalwart Dave Harris was at it again, raising funds for local charities by staging a boxing show at the Masonic Hall St Leonards on Sea. The show originally promoted as Hastings vs Liverpool was difficult to match, so the dinner show only went ahead with the support of local clubs answering our call for help at short notice, however that didn't detract from the quality on display and an excellent night of boxing was enjoyed by all.

2 of the 6 HWABC boxers matched on the show were victorious in their bouts, results for HWABC boxers were as follows:

Rhys Verlander HWABC LMPts Shane Hill Finchley ABC

Liam Foster HWABC LUPts Youssef Javad Earlsfield ABC

Fin Metcalfe HWABC WUPts Drew Jones Ramsgate ABC

George Edwards HWABC LUPts Stuart Searle Ramsgate ABC

Kyle Logan HWABC WUPts Gurave Saroye North Herts ABC

Josh Barnes HWABC LUPts Tom Humphries Ramsgate ABC

Having recovered from his cut eye, just in time for the Senior ABA championships Barry Buchanan suffered more disappointment when he was narrowly beaten by Mark Coombes in the Southern Counties 1/2 final after putting in a master class performance that many ringside thought worthy of victory and with Jake Towse bowing out of the CYPs National championship at the 1/2 final stage the final boxing action of the year for the West Hill team was to be on our own home show at the end of May.

"Home Show May 2010"

Some of the club's new kids on the block got their chance to shine on our final boxing outing of the year, our home show held at the Bexhill Athletic Centre.

The likes of Jamie Lennard, Jordan Panice, Josh Barnes and Carmine di Paolo all made their debuts and all passed their first test with flying colours.

19 year old Jamie Lennard was singled out for particular praise - at 117 Kg Jamie is uniquely light on his feet, however it was the manner in which he came storming back against the vastly more experienced Asa Pearson of Horsham ABC that really impressed. Having endured a standing count Jamie bit hard on his gum shield and was on the verge of transforming the bout before the final bell put paid to his gallant come back, eventually losing narrowly on a majority points decision.

Young Rhys Verlander 13 years shone once again and boxed very neatly to secure both victory and the "Best bout of the night" award.

Results for HWABC boxers on the night were as follows:

Conner Sime HWABC lost Dan Kirkland Horsham ABC

Rhys Verlander HWABC beat Troy Kruger Sheerness ABC

Henry Bristow HWABC lost George Bailey Bognor ABC

Kyle Logan HWABC beat Connor James Hove ABC

Daine Finch HWABC beat Lloyd Martin Whitehawk ABC

Jordan Panice HWABC lost Steve Eley Sheerness ABC

Jamie Lennard HWABC lost Asa Pearson Horsham ABC

Carmine di Paolo HWABC lost Ben Vickery Ramsgate ABC

Josh Barnes HWABC lost Marcos Hustler Brighton City ABC

Selsey Camping Trip

We recently took a party of 62 camping to Bun Leisure Selsey near Chichester for a weekend of relaxation, team building and general fun!

The pool at Bun Leisure

The facilities were excellent and although the weather wasn't the best, we all had a great time. The trip almost didn't take place as due to the popularity of the trip we were left short of transport and if it hadn't been for Hendy Hire stepping in too save the day by loaning us a minibus we would have been left disappointed - A big thanks to Steve and Hendy Hire for saving the day.

We shall honour the trip with a full update in due course so if you have any photos of the event please put them on a CD and hand them to Graham or email them to info@westhill-boxing.com
