Tony Gregory
(16 years, 61 kilos), however, didn't fair quite so well.
Coming back from having a chest infection, he was disappointed
to be stopped in the 3rd round by Nar Thapa (Westree ABC),
a very strong and ultra fit Gurkha boy.
JABA 1/4 Final
Broad Plain 9th May 2009
For the
3rd time this season Jake Towse reached the final stages
of a national competition, performed superbly, yet again
found himself on the wrong end of the judges decision when
computer scoring, as required by ABA rules was NOT in place
- The question is WHY?
Jake was
up against Howard Hart Class 60 Kg Mayflower ABC, taking
nothing away from Hart who boxed well on the back foot,
Jake boxed to the game plan and parried Hart's shots on
his forearm before moving into range against his taller
opponent to deliver hard scoring shots.
In the 4th
round Jake was so totally in control that if Hart had not
been allowed to constantly hold Jake could have won by stoppage.
Two judges
were spot on in our opinion scoring the bout in Jake's favour
9-3, but the other 3 judges went for Hart, one awarding
him the bout 14-12, which to many spectators, was beyond
comprehension unless the forearm has become part of the
scoring zone - Which of course is NOT the case.
Had computer
scoring been in place these enormous fluctuations in scoring
could not have happened and coaches / boxers would have
known exactly where they stood in terms of the judges score
at the end of each round and compensated accordingly.
Moulescombe ABC
Show 9th May 2009
Henry Bristow
was in no mood to take a step backwards when he met L Mack
of Blandford ABC on the Moulescombe ABC show held on the
9th May and dominated his opponent to secure a deserved
victory.
Henry is
putting together a very nice winning streak, going from
strength to strength.

Also boxing
was Fred Phelps who was pitched against Vitali Marchov of
Adur ABC. Fred has been below par this season but is beginning
to come good again, which was only a matter of time!
Fred pushed
Marchov hard and gave him all he could handle before losing
a majority decision - Keep it going Fred, the wins will
soon start to flow again.

Adur ABC Show
15th May 2009
15th May
at the Adur ABC show and Henry Bristow was was winning again,
this time against Z Morgan of Hove ABC - Keep your focus
Henry, you're doing well!
Steve Hill
back in action after a lay off was up against experienced
Max Wickes of Adur ABC.
Steve put
in a good performance but was just second best on this occasion
and Wickes deservedly secured a unanimous points victory
- Good to see you back in the gym Steve!!

Barry Buchanan
by his own admission, didn't box well when losing a majority
points decision and was disappointed in himself - Baz don't
forget it will take time for your body and timing to return
after major surgery so don't be so hard on yourself matey!
Taking nothing
away from his opponent Lee Garnham of Hove ABC who was giving
away a gulf in experience and boxed well to secure victory
- Best of luck Lee.
Horsham
ABC Show 23rd May 2009
We celebrated
3 fabulous displays from HWABC boxers on the Horsham ABC
held at Henfield Leisure Centre on the 23rd.
Rhys Verlander
showed real class when out pointing his opponent C Wilson
of Adur ABC securing a unanimous points victory that prompted
his coach Gary White to compliment Rhys saying it was his
best performance to date.
Barry Buchanan
bounced back from his previous disappointment to end a superb
bout with Ben Gumbrell of Horsham ABC by stoppage in the
3rd round with a hook that Floyd Mayweather would have been
proud of!
Referee
Paul Gates declared the bout to the be the "Bout of
the Night" in his opinion, he should know, he was closer
to the action than anyone!
Finally
John Verlander, Rhys Verlander's uncle box a tough opponent
in Shane Weston of Horsham ABC.
John was
slightly down after the first round but rallied well in
the 2nd, catching Weston with some cracking left hooks.
Both boys rallied in the 3rd but John deserved his victory
- Well done to both lads, it was a great bout.

On the same
day Ben White was our sole representative in the Harringay
Box Cup - Ben and father Gary were assisted by Finchley
ABC's Shaun Murphy whom both Gary and Ben would like to
thank along with Shaun's wife Tracy for the help and support
they provided.
Ben boxed
well but was unfortunately forced to take two standing counts
in the 4th round against capable opponent Josh Maclaren
of Queensbury Police ABC, and the bout was stopped. Gary
was delighted with Ben's performance up to that point as
he felt it was a well contested bout and was left disappointed
that the bout didn't go all the way - He felt it would have
been a close call.
Congratulations
Congratulations
to Ben White who reached his landmark 50th bout on June
6th at the Romford Show. Ben lost the bout to Lee
Martin of Chalvendon ABC on points but that doesn't detract
from a terrific achievement in reaching this milestone.

Congratulations
Congratulations
to John Verlander who will be marrying childhood sweat heart
Sarah Potter on the 6th June 2009, it will be a great day
and the HWABC family will be out in force celebrating the
happy occasion.
Best
of Luck
Our best
wishes go to Paul Gates and his family as he embarks on
a new adventure by moving North to take up a new position.
Paul has been involved with the Hastings West Hill ABC since
his youth as a boxer parent and coach and as a referee and
judge for the Southern Counties for countless years.
His input
at the club will be sadly missed and I am sure the Southern
Counties will find Paul's departing will leave a large hole
difficult to fill.
Paul is
pictured below during one of his funnier moments in the
ring as a referee, when losing his footing on a recent show
held in Hove - As you can see he took it in good spirits.

Good
news
Work has
started on an extension to the existing gym and is going
well - The improvements should be completed with plenty
of time to spare before the new season.
Senior sessions
will cease Thursday 21st June, Junior Wednesday evening
session are now finished for this season.
Sad
news

Army boxing champion later became a club coach for many

be remembered as a pillar of the local community. His good
deeds including raising funds for youth projects that many
have benefited from throughout the years.
