Dave
Bishop (pictured left), Hastings West Hill's Head
Coach was in charge of match making bouts for our home show
which was held at the ATHA Sports Centre Bexhill-on-Sea on
Dec 9th 2006. The evening was a great success
and ran perfectly to time starting as scheduled at 8 o’clock
with the last punches being thrown at midnight.
Originally
Dave had 23 bouts scheduled but due mainly to an outbreak
of flu the show was trimmed to 15 evenly matched bouts, of
the highest quality.
Well
done Dave, great job!
Dave’s
delight was obvious, in a local newspaper he was quoted as
saying:
“It
was probably the best show we have staged. The boxers were
well matched and the bouts were very even. There was a great
atmosphere at the ATHA, everyone seemed to enjoy it”
Dave
was quick to concede that a good show is dependent on the
support the travelling clubs and as such would like to publicly
thank the boxers and coaches who travelled from Horsham
ABC, Whitstable ABC, Hillcrest ABC, Kings ABC, Moulescombe
ABC, Lynn ABC, Elite Gravesend ABC, Hove ABC, New Addington
ABC and especially St Georges ABC
who travelled with minimal notice.
Hastings
West Hill Youth Club as a whole would like to thank all officials,
judges and referees who helped to stage such a great
event. The time you give is much appreciated.
A
special thank you goes to West Hill stalwart Dave
Harris, who's unwavering commitment to the club's
success is an example to us all. Dave was MC for the night
and as so often before he kept the crowd delighted with his
enthusiastic style of presentation.
Everyone
is now looking forward to June 9th 2007 when
boxing will take over the White Rock Pavilion
for the biggest night of boxing staged in Hastings in decades,
with such a high standard of match making it is going to be
a fantastic night’s entertainment that should attract
a huge audience.
Hastings
West Hill's hard working fund raiser Denise Atrell
(Mother of local boxing talent Shaun - pictured above right,
who's opponent unfortunately had to pull out of the scheduled
bout) was also over the moon as the show was packed to the
rafters with enthusiastic supporters, she said "We quite
literally couldn't have squeezed in any more people into the
hall. We wish to thank everyone who supported the event for
their co-operation, polite behaviour and the great atmosphere
they created".
Denise would especially like to thank the following businesses
for their continued support and sponsorship:
We are always on the look out for companies and individuals
to support us in our cause. If you would like to be part of
our next show scheduled to be held June 9th 2007 at
the White Rock Pavillion, Hastings (pictured left)
please contact
me, Denise with your ideas, suggestions or contributions or
alternative make a donation here
through our website - Thank you in advance!"
- Denise
As
for the results of each bout we have posted them below in
weight order, Junior bouts first, then Senior.
Unfortunately
the scheduled opponent for West Hill Boxing club's captain
Barry Buchanan was unable to attend due to illness so Barry
who was in the middle of a two fight series with Daniel Wright
of Honour Oak (both pictured above) at the time kindly put
pen to paper and drafted a report for each fight involving
a West Hill boxer. Barry's comments are directed in the main
at home show fighters as he did not feel it his place to comment
on opponents other than to offer encouragement and congratulate
them all on a overall high standard of skill and determination.

KG F. Smith (Hastings Westhill)
WMPTS M. Turner (Whitstable)

Barry's
comments: Frankie Smith's bout was very exciting,
both boys demonstrated quality boxing skills throwing a good
variation of shots to body and head. A well deserved majority
win on points. Well done Frankie an excellent all round display.

KG K. Logan (Hastings Westhill)
WMPTS L. Greenfield (Horsham)

Barry's
comments: Kyle was first up on the night, opening
a show is never easy especially a home show however Kyle dealt
with the pressure well and managed to dig in to take a majority
decision on points. It was a close fight that had the crowd
very excited. Well done Kyle keep upping the work rate and
you will continue to see improvements.

KG C. Sandells (Hillcrest) WMPTS J. Howard (Kings)

Barry's
comments: A close bout won by C. Sandells by a majority
points decision.

KG S. Hill (Hastings Westhill)
WUPTS L. Syred (Horsham)

Barry's
comments: Stephen Hill in his very first contest
seemed very nervous, as is natural and had a tentative 1st
round. The 2nd started was much better for the youngster as
he connected with some good shots and he went on to control
this round well. The 3rd round was very close as both contestants
began to tire but Steve held on to score a good opening victory.
During the interval Steve was awarded a fifty pound bonus
by former West Hill favourite Paul Huggins on behalf of the
Sussex Academy of Sport also know as the SAS
- Congratulations Steve spend the money wisely.

KG J. Smith (Hastings Westhill)
WUPTS L. Sweeney (New Addington)

Barry's
comments: Sid Smith, the reigning golden glove champion
began his bout in a tentative manner as both boys tried to
find their rhythm but there were soon heated exchanges, with
Sid landing accurate counter punches. The 2nd round started
with the away boxer forcing the pace but again Smith countered
very well with great accuracy, he then started to get the
jab working well. Sid began to dictate the contest towards
the end of the round. The 3rd round was a very good round
for Sid Smith as he took over with his slick boxing, earning
a unanimous points win with superior boxing. Later Smith was
awarded the well deserved "Best boxer of the night"
trophy.

KG B. White (Hastings Westhill)
NC/DSQ H. Napper (Bromley & Downham)

Barry's
comments: Ben White began the 1st round by taking
a good look at his foe, the pace soon rose as both lads tried
to stamp his authority on the other. The 2nd round started
with White putting more pressure on his opponent, he then
began to force his opponent back with his greater power. The
3rd round was scrappy as both boys tried to swing the bout
in his own favour. Unfortunately however the bout came to
an abrupt end as both boxers were disqualified for not stepping
back when the referee called "break" which was a
very unpopular with the crowd especially as the consensus
was that White was ahead at the time. Both lads I am sure
will take positives from the fight and continue to progress.
59
KG J. Towse (Hastings Westhill)
WUPTS C. Girton (Elite Gravesend)

Barry's
comments: The 1st round of Jake's bout started at
a frantic pace with both boys throwing combinations at will,
the pace then steadied toward the end of the round. The 2nd
began much like the 1st with both lads attacking at a ferocious
pace throughout the round. The final round was another fast
and furious session with Jake beginning to land the cleaner
shots which saw the home fighter take a unanimous verdict
in a very good contest.
59
KG S. Powell (Hastings Westhill)
LMPTS R. Shah (St. Georges)

Barry's
comments: Simon spent the 1st round of his bout mainly
on the back foot and needed to step in with his own shots
a little more. In the 2nd he listened to the advice of his
corner and showed a marked improvement as he landed the cleaner
shots from the off. Round 3 was an even better round for Simon
as he landed cleanly, unfortunately he had a point deducted
during the 3rd and sadly lost a majority decision. An excellent
display from both boys and a return many would enjoy in the
future.
60
KG O. Bristow (Hastings Westhill)
WRS3 B. Mercer (Hove)

Barry's
comments: Ollie Bristow started very well, forcing
his opponent back and forcing the pace in the 1st. the 2nd
round was much of the same as Bristow forced forward and his
greater power became apparent. The final round saw the away
boxer getting his shots of well but it wasn’t long before
Ollie came storming back and forced a standing 8 count that
soon led to a late stoppage in favour of the home lad.
62
KG J. Towsend (Hove) WUPTS C. Ward (St. Georges)

Barry's
comments: A good bout won by J. Townsend by a unanimous
points decision.
Senior
Bout Results
69
KG L. Jones (Hastings Westhill)
LUPTS R Burns (Whitstable)

Barry's
comments: The 1st round of Lee Jones' bout started
with both lads jabbing well through the round more and more
combinations were thrown. The 2nd round saw the jab used very
well until both fighters started to throw their big power
shots in an attempt to gain each other’s respect. The
3rd round saw the away boxer applying lots of pressure and
forcing Lee back until he started jabbing well again but sadly
this wasn’t Jones’ night as he lost a unanimous
verdict.
69
KG D. Warren (Hastings Westhill)
WUPTS K. Vanjay (Brighton City)

Barry's
comments: Dave Warren started tentatively in the
1st round of his bout until he landed well when throwing a
combination, thereafter he started to throw more power shots.
The 2nd round began with the away pushing forward hoping to
catch the judges’ eye but Warren started landing good
counter shots. A very good combination forced Dave’s
foe to the canvas towards the end of the round. The 3rd round
was a bit of a war with both lads trying to force their authority.
Dave was on the back foot a bit more in this round but still
landed the better punches and won a deserved points victory.
74
KG F. Phelps (Hastings Westhill)
WUPTS L. Rennie (Kings)

Barry's
comments: Fred Phelps set off at a frantic pace to
assert his authority but things got a bit scrappy as both
boys tried landing there power shots. The 2nd was a bit slower
with the jab coming into effect but the power from Freddie
was clear to be seen, and his opponent wasn’t very keen
to engage in a toe-to-toe battle. The 3rd round saw Fred pressing
forward and landing the better shots earning him a deserved
unanimous points win.
74
KG A. Dunkley (Moulescoombe) WUPTS A. Brazil (Lynn)

Barry's
comments: A good bout won by A. Dunkley whose superior
foot work gained him a unanimous points decision, over a hard
hitting A. Brazil.
83
KG A. Haniver (Hastings Westhill)
LMPTS D. Burton (Honour Oak)

Barry's
comments: Adam controlled the 1st round well using
his long jab and quality long distance punching. The away
boxer forced forward in the 2nd round but Adam took the shots
well and came back with his own counter attacks. Adam was
forced to take some heavy punches in the 3rd round but come
back well with single shots. The final round was much of the
same as Adam was under pressure but was still countering well.
It was a close fight Adam eventually going down by a majority
points verdict.
